The IDK Cafe is giving back to Monterey by delivering free chili Tuesday for those unable to leave their homes.
Owner Jennie Phillips said seeing Monterey residents deal with hardships caused by COVID inspired the generosity.
“There is a lot in the Monterey area that is suffering,” Phillips said. “And a lot of sickness. There has been a lot of deaths, and I just think this would be one way that IDK can reach out to people and just kind of help everyone we can in need, especially when it comes to food.”
Phillips said households up to five miles outside the city limits can receive the food. The restaurant is currently taking names and addresses for volunteers to make deliveries.
“If somebody volunteers to take it past that, then I don’t care,” Phillips said. “Towards Crossville, towards Livingston, it is pretty much what the volunteers expect to take it to and maybe families are coming to get it for a loved one. They can pick it up at IDK and actually take it to them.”
Phillips said using volunteers made the delivery service free. For now, this is a one day meal delivery program, but Phillips said if enough donations and volunteers are found, the service could be extended.
“What I am hoping to do is to do this on a regular basis, and if need be, on a daily basis,” Phillips said. “Everything that comes in. Any donations that come in. We are going to turn it right back into feeding somebody else.”
