Monterey Receives One Bid For Outdoor Classroom Project

The town of Monterey has received a bid for its outdoor classroom project at the Depot Museum.

Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said that the base bid came in at some $84,000. He said that the town allotted funds from ARP money.

“It’s a deck system that we’re wanting to do in a composite material and not in treated lumber,” Cleary said. “We think that the composite will have a longer life span. So that did make the price go up a little bit, going with the composite.”

Cleary said that the outdoor classroom area is part of a larger project to create options for a community gathering space in Monterey. He said that it will include a platform along the sides of the dining car and caboose as well as a deck system.

“That platform would be used for many educational purposes,” Cleary said. “Of course, we have the schools here frequently throughout the school year and so this will allow any students or classes at Burks or Monterey High School to utilize this outdoor element if they please and the inside of the dining car if they please.”

Cleary said that the next step will be for the board of alderman to consider and potentially approve the bid at its Monday meeting.
