Monterey Mayor JJ Reels officially resigned from his position Monday night.
Before the Board of Aldermen meeting began, Reels addressed the town confirming his decision.
“I’ve got some issues going on that being in a stressful position doesn’t make it any easier,” Reels said. “It doesn’t make it better, so, I think being the responsible thing to do is step down when you can’t effectively and comparably do the job you’re elected to do.”
Reels gave his thanks to the community and the Aldermen before leaving. Reels said he “wished nothing but the continued success of the board and the people of Monterey.”
After Reels’ statement, the meeting proceeded as normal. Certified Municipal Financial Officer Ella Dishman acted as the facilitator.
Aldermen did not discuss plans for handling the resignation.
