If you are looking to clean out your closet for a good cause, the town of Monterey will accept your clothing donations.
The town has three drop-off locations ready to take gently worn clothing. Mayor JJ Reels said look for a labeled box at the Monterey Police Department, City Hall or the Monterey Depot.
“It was really cold there a couple weeks ago, and people don’t realize but there are homeless people living in Monterey,” Reels said. “What could we do to help, and I got to thinking. I am like we can do a coat drive.”
While it may be titled a coat drive, Reels said other clothing items from socks to hats are accepted. Reels said the community has responded well with several bags of clothing already collected. Even Putnam County will be giving to the cause.
“Myself and Rafferty Cleary had a meeting with John Ross Albertson, the Director of Putnam County Parks and Recreation,” Reels said. “He said he has several hundred coats that were donated by the Governor when we had the tornado in Cookeville. So he is going to donate 100 each of girls and boys coats. That’s a tremendous blessing.”
Reels said he is working with Hope in Christ Fellowship in Monterey to set up a day when people can pick up free clothing items. Reels said it will likely happen sometime in February. Reels said donations and pick ups are open to all outside of Monterey.
“It’s about helping out your brother,” Reels said. “Treating everybody the same. If they are under served or under privileged and we have an opportunity to help them, I think its our duty to help them.”
Clothing will be accepted until February 6th, but Reels said that date is not concrete with donations always welcomed.
