Monterey Getting New Water Feature

Kids in Monterey will have a new place to chill at this summer.

John Ross Albertson is the Putnam County Parks and Recreation Director. He said the county will be using state grant funding to construct a water feature at Whitaker Park.

“We looked at several different ideas of what we could do to help the park here in Monterey and in our talks a water feature came up,” Albertson said. “It’s something we’ve talked about in the past for some of our other facilities as well.”

Albertson said construction will get underway as soon as the money enters a bank account.

“We are actually in the process of drawing up a design and getting it laid out. That’s what we are going to be doing this week, is starting to work at the park in the area we’ve chosen,” Albertson said. “We’re hoping to have it open going into this summer.”

Albertson said the non-matching grant comes from the local health department.

“That’s always one of the great things whenever you find money from the state or from grants that you have no match for,” Albertson said. “That’s what we look for and it was a great opportunity for the county to be able to work with the city on this project.”

Monterey will spend a small amount of money to extend water lines to the feature and provide some excavation work.
