Monterey Accepts $84,623 Bid For Roof Replacement

The town of Monterey will spend nearly $85,000 to replace a leaky roof at city hall.

That price includes a $10,000 add-alternate to get the project under warranty. Alderman Nathan Walker said he didn’t mind spending the extra money to fix the problem.

“In my experience, you can pay for it up front or you can pay for it twice later down the road,” Walker said. “To have it done right the first time, I’m definitely in favor of that, rather than having to revisit this in five or ten years.”

The add-alternate includes the installation of crickets to help push ponding water to the roof drains. Mt. Juliet-based Austermiller Roofing would not warranty the project unless the city paid for installing the crickets.

Aldermen also decided to include a second add-alternate for replacing rotten decking found inside the roof. The company will charge $3.50 per square foot to replace the decking.

Sparta-based E.S. Construction submitted a $68,929 project bid. Alderman Mark Farley recommended not going with that bid because it did not go far enough to address the city’s problem.

The board awarded the roof replacement bid Austermiller Roofing during Monday night’s meeting. The decision came nearly three years after the city allocated funding for making repairs to the roof.
