McMinnville Storm Drain Art Contest

The City of McMinnville sidewalks are going to be more colorful in the next few months.

The Stormwater Department is holding an art contest. Two winning artists will paint over two storm drains to raise environment and pollution awareness.

Stormwater Manager Lyndon Bussell said this is a great way to bring the community together and help focus on something other than the pandemic.

“In Downtown McMinnville, anytime you bring more color to a historic part of town, I think it’s phenomenal,” Bussell said. “It brings attention to not only the stormdrains, but it brings attention to the shops that may be down there and everything. We feel like it’s a win-win for really everyone.”

Bussell said artists ages 12 and up can send a colored sketch to the Stormwater Department. He said paint will be provided for the two winners.

The deadline to submit artwork is September 28. Two winners will be announced September 30, and the artists will have the whole month of October to finish painting.

“We’re just trying to do something fun and educational for the community down in Warren County,” Bussell said.

Other cities like Kingsport and Chattanooga have implemented this idea.
