McBroom Chapel Church of Christ will have its first service this Sunday since it was damaged by the 2020 tornado.
McBroom Family Historian Larry McBroom said when he first heard that the church was made structurally unsound by the storm, he was in disbelief. He said when they tore it down in April, there was uncertainty it would even be rebuilt.
McBroom said the opportunity to hold services once again is significant not just to the congregation or to the McBroom family, but to the entire community.
“The people of the McBroom Chaple Church of Christ want this brand new church to be an everlasting, everliving memorial to those precious souls who lost their lives,” McBroom said. “And let it be a special place in our hearts where we can let it be a memorial to them.”
The worship service will start at 10 a.m. with evangelist Randy Bybee. There will also be a bible study at 9 a.m. and an evening service at 5 p.m.
McBroom said the church turns 128 this month. He said that it is the oldest Church of Christ congregation in western Putnam County. In addition to serving as a religious landmark, McBroom said it is a landmark for those with the McBroom family name.
“We’d always go down to the McBroom Chapel Church of Christ and get their pictures made there with the church and the big sign that said the name,” McBroom said. “So it became more like a McBroom family focal point and symbol.”
McBroom said all are invited to celebrate this symbol of strength and renewal.
“Please come to this church, this church needs that new start,” McBroom said. “Let’s all be there to support it whether you come one Sunday, two Sundays. It doesn’t matter what church you belong to. Some people say ‘I can’t go to church because I don’t have fancy clothes.’ No. You just get there, doesn’t matter if you have overalls on or what, just get there when those doors are open.”
