It’s been at least a decade since Algood raised property taxes, but continuing that trend becoming more difficult.
Mayor Lisa Chapman Fowler said as the community grows, the need for services increases. She said residents this year requested new services and upgrades that the city cannot afford.
“There are some items that citizens are concerned about and would like to see happen just we don’t have the budget for it for this year,” Fowler said. “But at some point, I just want everybody to know, and nobody likes to hear that dreaded “t” word about taxes. But I’m afraid that if we continue to grow and need to do more repairs and projects, that we may have to consider that at some point.”
Fowler said she believes it has been 11 years since the property tax increased.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said earlier this year he has tried to keep costs under control this year, knowing the budget would be tight. Some projects, including the Algood Park, are moving slower than some residents would like.
The property tax rate stands at $0.3623 per $100. The council passed the budget on first reading Tuesday.
