Longtime Sparta Mayor Jeff Young and Alderman Hoyt Jones were honored for their long tenure as city officials Thursday night.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen presented a custom wooden clock for their service. Jones addressed the board as a citizen as the meeting concluded. He said there are two projects he would like to see the new administration complete.
“Number one is to paint and finish the caboose over at the city cemetery,” Jones said. “We have a lot of visitors in Sparta, but I would like to see that if you could ever work that out.”
Jones said his second request as a citizen is to find a new home for the White County Heritage Museum. Jones said the operation has outgrown the Main Street building.
“I would like to see the city of Sparta and the county to take on the project to find them a bigger building, so they can have more parking and more space for donations,” Jones said.
Mayor Jerry Lowery agreed with the need to finish the caboose. Alderman Jim Floyd said he already has a location in mind for the museum.
