Local Investor Still Pursuing Barging System For Gainesboro Port Authority

Gainesboro Port Authority Chairman Tony Hunter said local businessman Hugh Cameron is pursuing grants to develop an autonomous barging system for the port.

After several months, Hugh Cameron provided an update to the Port Authority on his plan to develop and implement an autonomous barging system.

“He is working with different entities that do shipping on the river,” Hunter said. “So they are interested, I think he is moving forward with his project.”

Hunter said that he is optimistic and supportive of Cameron’s plans. Hunter said he expects Cameron to keep them updated on the project.

“He’ll keep us updated as the need comes,” Hunter said. “Really, right now he doesn’t have a use for the port until he gets a little further along in his project and he needs a place to put it.”

Hugh Cameron originally presented this idea to the Gainesboro Port Authority in 2020. The Port Authority Board originally requested a long-range plan for its September meeting.
