LBJ&C Headstart Accepting Applications For Coming Year

Celina’s L.B.J. & C Headstart locations looking to fill up spots for the coming school year.

Assistant Director Jennifer Taylor said that Headstart is a federally-funded program designed to set kids aged three to five up for success before starting kindergarten.

“Parents are great teachers but you can’t really do the structured environment as much as the classroom,” Taylor said. “And also the children have a hard time developing those social skills because a lot of times it’s just maybe one or two children in the home and that’s different from a classroom where you have twenty kids.”

In addition to social skills, students also get to work on early academia, like spelling, counting, science, and social studies. Taylor said Headstart also offers a comprehensive list of services for students and families, including mental health resources, meals, and childcare.

Headstart has 21 locations across the 12 Upper Cumberland counties. Taylor said that locations seeking more students include Algood, Byrdstown, Clarkrange, Shiloh, and Smith County.
