Lack Of Communication Angers Van Buren Commissioner

Van Buren County’s Convenience centers have reduced Saturday hours. The lack of communication about the change did not sit well with Van Buren County Commissioner Bill Mosley during Tuesday night’s Commissioners meeting.

“Now I don’t like to be blindsided,” Mosley said. “It’s very embarrassing to have to be notified that the hours are going to be changed and people calling and say ‘what’s going on Bill’ and I don’t have the answer. Now, my question is, could you not show us enough respect to tell us about it.”

County Mayor Greg Wilson said he made the change to save money. Wilson said the majority of Saturday visitors to convenience centers happen before 11am.

“We watched it for several weeks and the bulk of it comes of a morning before 11:00 to tell the truth,” Wilson said. “And so we decided to go back. We we’re wasting a lot of money.”

Wilson said he thought he had the authority to make the change. Wilson asked Mosley why he did not call and ask him instead of bringing it before the commissioners.

In other business, Van Buren County Commissioners approved a plan to allow UCHRA to use the Masonic Building for a new daycare facility.

It would serve children ages six weeks to three years of age with free day care services for those who qualify. The facility would employ roughly 10 residents. UCHRA officials have already looked at the Masonic Building and believe it will be an appropriate facility.
