If you travel Highway 111 in Cookeville, you noticed the median mowed this week and in its aftermath, trash all through the grass.
Keep Putnam County Beautiful Executive Coordinator Rob Wright said that litter in the county happens both intentionally and unintentionally. He said that the best thing to do to fix the issue is to be accountable.
“Kind of checking personal responsibility,” Wright said. “So making sure if you’re going to roll your windows down in your car, have your car clean make sure you don’t have any loose debris in the back of your pickup trucks When you take your trash out to the curb, make sure it’s not overfilled because the wind can actually blow stuff out of there.”
Wright said that for those interested, the Clean Commission will provide litter pick-up supplies to aid in the efforts. He said that autumn is the best weather for cleanups.
Wright said that the reduction of litter is integral to being a good steward of the planet.
“If we don’t reduce the amount of litter, more and more litter is going to get into the environment,” Wright said. “Just because it flies off the truck and into the woods doesn’t mean it disappears in six months, three years, five years. It’s there forever until it gets dealt with. So the longer the litter issue continues, the more trash ends up building in our natural areas, our waterways, our communities.”
