Jamestown expected to get its first shipment to stock City Lake with 2 acres worth of fish this week.
Something that Jamestown Mayor Lyndon Baines said to his knowledge has not been done in 10 years. $4,000 was approved by the Jamestown Board of Aldermen Monday night to stock four acres of fish, which is something Baines said he wants to make a habit of.
“I would like to do at least two acres every time and that would be four acres a year,” Baines said. “So, like I say, if I can get it put in the budget for the next four years, we’ll do four acres every year for the next four years, that’s the plan anyway and we’ll see what happens.”
Baines said the fish will be coming from Arkansas and the supplier will give the city a list of fish to select. Baines said the second stocking will take place in April, and wants to see how the fish take to City Lake.
“We wanna see how this works, and if something happens we may have to find somebody else to bring them to us,” Baines said. “We want to see how it works out, that’s the reason we only done the four acres at this time.”
Baines said this was something he wanted to do for his local fisherman and local economy. Baines said there are not many local options for lake fishing and sees the opportunity.
“It helps us economically too for taxes, you know people buying stuff and taking it to the lake,” Baines said. “People around her are pretty good about not trashing it up too, so that’s one other good thing we have.”
Baines said $2,000 will come out of both the water department and water plants budget. City Lake is a man-made lake and is fed by seven different springs and creeks.
