For the second year, the Jamestown Rotary Club celebrating the county’s veterans with its Field of Flags fundraiser in November.
Community members can purchase an American flag to place at the Jamestown City Park soccer field to honor or in memory of a hero. Rotary Club President April Conatser said the fundraiser was brought back as people show lots of love to those who deserve to be recognized.
“The reason we do this is to honor and recognize all the heroes that are out there that have fought for our country that are serving the citizens every single day,” Conatser said. “We want to honor them and let them know that we appreciate what they have done and what they are still doing for us.”
Conatser said people who purchase a flag can honor anyone as people have honored veterans, emergency first responders, and teachers. Conatser said the flags will be displayed on November 2nd and a closing ceremony will follow on November 10th.
“I feel like that is something the community can come together and celebrate together, to remember together,” Conatser said. “It’s very important for people to see that.”
Conatser said after the ceremony each flag will come with a special medallion for those who participated to keep.
“There’s going to be a medallion in the honor or in memory of that person,” Conatser said. “That will state that person’s name and what branch of service they may be in or what their occupation is.”
Conatser said all funds raised will be put back into the Rotary Club to help the community. Conatser said they help by providing scholarships, updating parks, and Christmas shopping for kids. There will be only a hundred flags available and each flag will cost $35. For more information visit the Jamestown Rotary Club’s Facebook page.
