Jackson County Central Fire Department has a new memorial honoring the life of Eddie Brewer.
Brewer was a long-time volunteer for the department and the county’s rescue squad until he decided to follow his dream to become an over-the-road truck driver. Chief Jeff Conn said the 35-year-old lost his battle to COVID in February of this year.
“He would, just like every single one of us, put his daily things aside and give his time to the community,” Conn said. “And put his life on the line to serve others and not think twice about it and have the bravery to do that. We all strive to be like that and serve in his honor every day.”
Conn said the work was commissioned by Brewer’s brother, Joe Brewer. What makes the piece even more special was that it was created by one of the department’s own, Ethan Leonard.
“It means a lot, I know it means a lot to us and it means a lot to his family too,” Conn said. “That every time we go out, we’re going to see that. It’s based on the wall in between our firetrucks so we’re going to see that every time before we leave our building. He’s going to be with us everywhere we go.”
