Ice Melts Not A Major Concern But Pet Owners Should Be Aware

Ice melt salts do not pose a major threat to pets but could cause some minor health implications for your dogs.

Cookeville Putnam County Animal Shelter Director Jennifer Hutchinson-Tracy said pet owners should be on the look out especially with this week’s icy weather.

“There’s definitely a risk with the ice melts,” Hutchinson-Tracy said. “There are some that are branded as more pet safe than others. The biggest risk is with the pets getting that on their paws, licking their paws and those increased sodium levels.”

Hutchinson-Tracy said most of the time the sodium just causes an upset stomach but high-concentrations can cause neurological issues. Hutchinson-Tracy said she recommends to wipe your pet’s feet before going inside to ensure they are clean.

Hutchinson-Tracy said you can also try pet booties if your dog will wear them. Hutchinson-Tracy said overall, the issue is not very prevalent from what the animal shelter sees.

As for the ice itself, Hutchinson-Tracy said extended exposure to a pets paw pads can cause the skin to crack.
