Crossville’s Holiday Lake To Drop Levels To Allow For Repairs And Maintenance

November 1 is an important day for Crossville Residents that live on Holiday Lake.

The city will drop the water level to allow homeowners to do repairs and maintenance on docks and seawalls. Lakeside residents will also need to make sure their boats are out of the water by that date. Crossville City Manager Greg Wood said it is an attempt to help residents get work done

“Obviously if you have something that is in the water and there is waves and wakes and weather, its going to deteriorate over time,” Wood said. “Its a little hard to repair when the lake water is up, so we try and schedule a time every three years normally.”

The city has four large valves on the Holiday Lake Dam that will open up to allow the water to drop on November 1. Wood said it makes sense to do it early enough that homeowners can get the work done before the worst of winter weather arrives.

Wood said the city tried to lower the lake three years ago but was unsuccessful.

“We basically had a very rainy winter, and the lake never significantly went down,” Wood said. “We tried it again two years ago and had a little better luck. Now we are getting back on the normal three-year cycle.”

The city waited until winter to drop the lake as there is less water demand from the public and more precipitation.

“People are not watering their lawns, things like that, washing their cars, so less demand for water,” Wood said. “Also, nature is providing irrigation for lawns and things like that. The deciduous trees are not out anymore they dropped their leaves and there’s not that water demand, and there is not that water demand. So its a combination of the water availability from nature and a lack of water demand from the public.”

Wood said it is important to get this information out to the public as soon as possible so those with lakeside property can set up appointments with contractors and plan repairs.

“We’re sending letters out to all the property owners today,” Wood said. “Plus we have these radio guys calling in to let the public know whats going on as well. We will also put it on our Facebook page.”
