Genesis House Hosting Community Meeting To Plan Homeless Support

The Genesis House seeking local businesses and civic groups to help the homeless population of Overton County.

The domestic abuse advocate group is partnering with Salvation Army to plan a summer fundraising effort. Sexual Assault Advocate Shelia Ford said the organization wants to raise funds for abuse cases that often lead to homelessness.

“Usually it will be mothers with children and they don’t work,” Ford said. “They are home being a stay at home mom, and their abuser is pretty much their financial supporter. When they leave that situation, they sometimes end up being homeless.”

Ford said the groups will host a community meeting February 2nd to discuss a “Christmas in July” Kettle Bell fundraiser. It takes place at the Livingston Chamber of Commerce at 2:30 p.m.

Ford said the money raised would go towards supplies and shelters the Salvation Army provides. Ford said the goal is to raise community awareness that the issue is present in Overton County while also helping local families.
