Alex Garcia defeated Jeremiah Bowman in the race for Monterey Mayor, winning 60.95 percent of the vote.
Garcia said he spent all of election day at the polls shaking hands and talking with Monterey citizens. Garcia said he thinks that taking the time to meet people swung votes in his direction.
“I think it was just putting myself out there so people that had questions can come by and ask them,” Garcia said. “I think it was the right thing to do. In any situation, you know, you’re voting for somebody, if you don’t know them, come out and talk to them and see what they’re like and see if you guys have common goals.”
Garcia said he wants to work with new and existing aldermen alike to take Monterey forward. He said he plans to listen to the people of the city and work to get the Monterey’s voice heard in the county.
“There’s been some changes today,” Garcia said.
