Gainesboro will begin stronger enforcement of an old vehicle ordinance due to complaints from the public.
Alderwoman Nancy Pruett said the ordinance prohibits vehicles without up-to-date license plates from being left on public streets. She said there are several junk cars parked along public roads that will be dealt with.
“We’re just trying to clean up our little town and make it look better,” Pruett said. “And I’ve had some complaints from neighbors who would call me about certain – not my neighbors, but neighbors of people that are in violation, and asking that some things be done. So that’s kind of how this all came about.”
Pruett said the law was already in place but was not being enforced due to a lack of personnel within the city. She said the city’s search for a new codes enforcer will provide additional support for the law.
“This really is not my job, other than to make sure that we do have someone enforcing them,” Pruett said.
Pruett said the city is also looking to implement another old law prohibiting unfit structures in the city, such as a house that was ruined in a fire but was never properly demolished.
“It’s just something that they have enforced that in the past,” Pruett said. “They usually keep up with people who have yards that are overgrown. They’ve always done that. So there’s really, that’s the main thing that’s just to clean up.”
