A new chainlink fence at the Gainesboro Park basketball court marks the final stages of its park renovation project.
Mayor Lloyd Williams said the fence will be put in place for safety measures. He said because the court is next to a road, a fence will hopefully better prevent a ball from rolling out onto the street.
“It’s very exciting, I’ve got two kids who play basketball and they’re looking forward to it, and it’s a top-notch court looking at it,” Williams said. “I’m sure other kids in Gainesboro and Jackson County will enjoy it. It’s a great accomplishment.”
Williams said the city received two bids, with prices ranging from $6,000 for an 8-foot-high fence to $8,500 for a 10-foot-high fence. He said the Board of Aldermen will meet this Thursday in a special-called meeting to approve a bid.
Williams said the entire project started with a $450,000 Project Diabetes Grant. The purpose of the funds is to help primary prevention projects that aim to prevent disease from ever occurring.
“It’s coming to a close now,” Williams said. “We’re very proud of the work everybody had done on it, it looks gratn. So this is our last step and then we will complete that grant.”
As soon as the bid is awarded, Williams said it will be up to the company to actually construct it.
