Gainesboro Aldermen Delay Decision For Road

Gainesboro Aldermen decided to defer decision on the bid for a collapsed tile on Baugh Hollow Lane after the bid came back higher than expected.

The bid was originally an estimated $8,000 but the bid increased to $11,000 after the city received an updated quote from the Jackson County Highway Department. A majority of the cost was updated pricing on building supplies. Alderwoman Nancy Pruett said the city is responsible for the repairs even though the damage was done by county trucks.

“I just know legally that we are required,” Pruett said. “From what our city attorney stated that we are legally required to repair this.”

The bid consisted of repairs that would last ten years and were significantly cheaper than other long-term solutions proposed to the city. Aldermen Ricky Head said he did not approve the bid because the repair was a short-term solution.

“I’m not going to second it because I think we could have left it alone,” Head said. “And it would have been a way to help us out cause this just been a band-aid on it for a few more years down the road.”

The tile was damaged by county trucks traveling back and forth from the county garage. The aldermen unanimously decided to defer the decision.
