Gainesboro Aldermen Discuss Fixing Damaged Road; Say County Responsible

Gainesboro aldermen discussed Thursday night how they want to work with Jackson County to repair damage to Valhalla Lane, though the responsibility for the repairs remains a question mark.

Alderman Ricky Head there is a broken drainage tile on the street. Alderman Travis Agee said the county should fix the road regardless of who owns it because their 70,000 lb. dump trucks caused the damage.

“Had it been asked, ‘Hey, you want to split – you know, we realize that these dump trucks caused this, you know, could we talk about splitting the cost to fix it?’ That never was discussed, it was just brought, just an estimate sent to us, ‘Hey, this is what we’ll do to fix it.’ Well that ain’t – that ain’t good enough for me,” Agee said.

Agee said if the city agrees to fix the road they can choose to put a weight limit there to prevent further damage. He said it would take $200,000-$300,000 to repair the road and modify it so it could withstand the county’s dump trucks without falling apart again.

“I’ve got jobs all over downtown Nashville and Mount Juliet and Franklin,” Agee said. “If I tear up their road, you know who’s got to fix that? The city of – You think I’m going to go to the city of Franklin and then tell them, ‘Hey, I tore your road up, you need to fix it?’ No.”

Mayor Lloyd Williams said the city should search for a peaceful resolution to the issue.

“We’re working with the county,” Alderwoman Nancy Pruett said. “They need to work with us, we need to work with them.”

City Supervisor Chester Hamlet said fixing the road without additional modifications will cost $20,000.
