Former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said the resignation of current mayor Megan Barry made for a “difficult day” for the city.
Dean visited Monterey Tuesday morning as part of an election swing through the state. He visited with officials at held meetings at the Bank of Putnam County on West Commercial Avenue.
“I am positive that the city will pull itself up and move forward,” Dean said. “I am confident that David Briley, who is now the mayor, will do an excellent job. He’s got a strong background. He is very much prepared, so I think the city will be in good hands.”
Barry resigned two hours earlier Tuesday after pleading guilty to felony theft of property over $10,000. Barry agreed to reimburse the city of Nashville $11,000 and will serve three years of probation. The incident stems from Barry’s admitted affair with her city-appointed bodyguard.
Dean became the first Democrat to enter the governor’s race last February. He served as Nashville’s mayor from 2007 to 2015. Dean will face Democratic State Representative Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley in the May primary.
