Fireworks For The Fourth Of July: Rules On Fireworks In Cookeville City Limits

The Fourth of July is this weekend, and many in Cookeville’s community are gearing up to celebrate the holiday by setting off fireworks.

However when it comes to individuals using fireworks, it’s important to keep in mind there are rules that come with it. Cookeville Codes Department Director Jeff Littrell said there is a specific time frame you can set off fireworks.

“You’re not supposed to shoot them before 9 a.m., and no later than 10 p.m. with the exception of July 4th,” Littrell said. “And no later than 12 a.m. on July 4th itself.”

According to Cookeville code Title 7 Chapter 5, it is unlawful to set off fireworks within 600 feet of any church, hospital, funeral home, or school. It’s also a violation to set off fireworks from a car, at a car, or at any person or group of people.

The code also dictates any violation of the city’s codes is declared a misdemeanor. That person could face a fine if convicted.

The hours are the same for the New Year’s Eve holiday, from December 28th to January 2nd. On New Year’s Eve, Littrell said you shouldn’t shoot fireworks later than 1 a.m.

Littrell said he wants people who will be using fireworks this weekend to remember that fireworks are not toys.

“Y’know not realizing the power they actually have,” Littrell said. “Shooting them along the ground that could actually catch your field on fire. Trying to hold them in their hand and let them go like a roman candle or something like that when it could very easily explode.”
