Fentress County Not Expecting Changes To Property Taxes

Fentress County Executive Jimmy Johnson doesn’t expect the county’s property tax rate to change for the new fiscal year.

Johnson said the county commission’s budget committee will meet next week to finalize the 2019-2020 spending plan.

“We’re going to scratch and claw and keep [property taxes] as low as we can,” Johnson said. “Of course as each year goes, you always have inflation coming on. Hopefully not this year, nothing will come down the pipe this year as far as taxes. Hopefully we’ll be able to live by our means that we have.”

Fentress County residents currently pay a $1.91 property tax rate.

Johnson said he would like to give raises to county employees if possible without raising taxes.

“Of course we’d love to give everybody a gigantic raise and have more stuff done, but of course you have to have revenue before you can do all of that,” Johnson said. “Hopefully we can get some type of raises in and try to stay around the same tax rate that we already have at this time.”

The budget committee meets Monday, Aug. 5 at the Fentress County Courthouse to consider the 2019-2020 budget proposal. The full commission will consider the budget committee’s proposal during their Aug. 27 meeting.
