Fentress Commissioners Approve New County Road List

The Fentress County Highway Department presented an updated county road list to Commissioners Monday night.

Road Superintendent Ryan Reed said the list includes 714 roads with a total of 570 miles.

“If you notice, that’s considerably lesser amount of miles than last year,” Reed said. “But we’ve done a major overhaul on our road list. We started in September. I bought a meter you could plug into your computer port on your truck and actually get the correct measurements on these roads. And we rode every road that was on the road list.”

Reed said he found discrepancies, such as the Caney Creek Road. The old report showed seven miles of Fentress County Road. Reed said the road is actually only one-half mile in Fentress with the rest in Pickett County.

Estimating he has gone over the report more than a half dozen times, Reed said he still anticipates changes.

“It is a major overhaul that we’ve done on it and corrections,” Reed said. “So we’re probably going to have a couple of months here that we’re still going to be doing some corrections, but I’ll just bring them back to the commission with every correction we make as we find them.”

In other business, Commissioners approved a chance to the budget moving money for school resource officers to its own budget line. The Comptroller recommended the change, according to Finance Director Tyler Arms, based on new state funding of SROs. The commissioners also voted to apply for a new reading grant.
