Fentress Ag Pavilion Land Purchase Tabled

Fentress County Commissioners tabled a decision on purchasing land for a proposed Agriculture pavilion until Monday.

The 15 acres at 3600 South York Highway will be discussed at a special called meeting Monday night. Fentress County Commissioner Rod Williams made the motion which passed by a 7-3 vote.

Fentress County Mayor Jimmy Johnson said at $15,000 per acre, this has been the cheapest option so far. But Johnson said if the commission wants to look at cheaper options, it can be done.

“Whatever you say is what we’ll do, we’ll advertise, we’ll go back and say all we want’s two acres, or five acres or 10 acres or whatever y’all want to do,” Johnson said. “It just popped up and we’ll do it or we’ll extend it and we’ll talk about it more.”

Johnson said the plan is to advertise what the county is looking for over the next two-to-three weeks. However, Johnson said he believes things will get moving on the pavilion when people know exactly where it will be.

“Until you stick a sign up some place that says this is where it’s gonna be, then you’re gonna have people that realize all over the county that you’re actually gonna do something about it,” Johnson said. “You’re not gonna put it off no longer and you’re gonna do something and you’re gonna have people that will wanna jump onboard I believe, and want to help to do something.”

A location needs to be chosen before any further grants can be applied for on the pavilion. Johnson said the project has to be complete by 2022 to use the $150,000 dollar grant already approved for the project.
