Experts Ask For Fire Safety Practices This Holiday Weekend

In planning for fun at campouts and making s’mores by the campfire, you should also plan for fire safety.

Jackson County Fire Chief Jeff Conn said a common mistake among fire-users is not being cautious when starting fires, especially when using accelerants.

“A lot of times when the people use a product like that, they’ll get really close to it or they’ll have their face really close to it,” Conn said. “And sometimes when the fire starts like that, it can blow back in their faces and cause severe burns.”

Conn said it’s important to check weather conditions, especially checking for wind. He said while it seems like rain is frequent in the Upper Cumberland, dryness will cause major issues when it comes to fires.

He said it’s not a good idea to build directly under trees, and emphasized that people should use accelerants sparingly.

“Of course there are a lot of people who use accelerants,” Conn said. “Lighter fluids, and things like that, fire starters. It’s always best to try and use that in moderation. Know the products you’re using, and not to use too much of it.”

Conn also said he recommends keeping a source of water near in case of emergencies. He said he urges people to think before they build fires.

“Just one little ember can start large grass fire or forest fire,” Conn said. “Also there’s always the danger of not knowing how to properly start a fire or put one out and getting burnt.”
