Residents in Timothy and East Clay County can expect to see their volunteer firefighters out going door to door on Saturday.
East 52 Volunteer Fire Department Chief James King said East 52 and the Timothy Volunteer Fire Departments are taking part in the Front Porch Fire Prevention Blitz. King said they do not get many opportunities to visit people’s homes and this is a chance to spread the word about fire safety.
“We go out and go door to door, front porches and lay information on the porch in packets,” King said. “Or if the people are home, we speak to the people about fire safety and the smoke alarm program.”
King said they will be out at 10:00 AM on Saturday.
King said these efforts are important to maintain a connection with community, as their support keeps volunteer operations going. He said that this is a chance for residents to arrange for getting smoke alarms properly installed.
“The volunteer departments rely on fundraising efforts, we don’t get a whole lot of funds from the county to keep our departments open,” King said. “So getting out in the community, actually meeting the community and letting them see us and that we’re doing stuff in the community is very important.”
King said 90 departments across the state are enrolled in the Front Porch Fire Prevention Blitz. This effort is organized by the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office.
