December TTU Death Ruled Accidental; No Charges Filed

Authorities have determined the 2018 death of a 23-year-old Maryville man at Tennessee Tech to be accidental.

Cookeville Police released a statement Friday that Paul Ten Eyck had brought and consumed large amounts of alcohol at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity near TTU’s campus.

The investigation determined Ten Eyck laid down on a couch after consuming the alcohol and presumably fell asleep.

Witnesses who were present noticed Ten Eyck stopped breathing and attempted CPR while emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

Putnam County EMS transported Ten Eyck to Cookeville Regional Medical Center where he died shortly after arrival.

The state medical examiner finished the autopsy report last Friday, which concluded Ten Eyck died of acute ethanol toxicity.

The District Attorney’s Office determined no criminal charges would be pursued.

Tennessee Tech suspended SAE activity immediately after the investigation began in December. The fraternity’s national Board of Directors later suspended the chapter themselves in February, citing “health and safety reasons.”

Cookeville Police officer their condolences to Ten Eyck’s family.
