Dale Hollow’s Eagle Watching Excursions To Return

Dale Hollow’s annual eagle-watching excursions return for another year this Saturday, bringing visitors from all over to visit the beloved bald eagles, River and Obey.

The watches have occurred on the third and fourth Saturdays of January since the early 90s. Eagle Cam Facebook Page Manager Darlene Neeley said it is easiest to see the nests during this time of year.

“There are no leaves on the trees,” Neeley said. “In the spring and summer, you can’t see the nests and stuff because of the leaves.”

Neeley said the eagle enthusiasts are transported by open barge in search of getting an up-close look at the birds in real life. She said the activity is very popular and it attracts large crowds each year.

Neeley said fans of the eagles have been able to keep track through the cam. She said it has been interesting to see the eagles rebuild their nest after the last one was destroyed by the storm. Neeley said in keeping up with the camera, they also have learned the eagles are preparing to lay new eggs.

“I think people enjoy seeing eagles and it is quite a thrill to be able to see one fly over your head,” Neeley said.
