Cumberland Sheriff’s Department Encouraging Drivers To Slow Down

Law Enforcement Agencies across the Upper Cumberland are partnering with the state Highway Safety Department to promote, “Slow Down Tennessee.”

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department among those increasing patrols and education opportunities. Sheriff Casey Cox said it seems today that drivers are traveling faster than ever.

“Since January 1st of 2021, there’s been 46 traffic related incidents where speed was determined as the contributing factor just in Cumberland County,” Cox said. “That’s a number we want to see reduced.”

Cox said he is also working on a new program for young drivers to understand the dangers of speed. Cox said all it takes is driving five or 10 mph over the speed limit to cause serious damage in the event of an accident.

“It’s the responsibility of the driver to always drive safe at all times and maintain a suitable speed for the road conditions,” Cox said. “Just because the speed limit may say 55, due to road conditions, you may not need to be driving at 55. So, we just need to slow down and take our time and drive safer.”

Cox said the campaign runs until October 29th. Cox said more speed enforcement will be in place during that time period.
