Cumberland Mountain State Park Holds First Summer Camp for those 40 and up.
Park Ranger Kacey King said the park has quite a few older clientele. King said staff had decided it was about time that they offer a Summer Camp geared towards that age.
“It’s going to be a lot more hands on and a lot more recreational,” King said. “They’ll get to do archery and tomahawk throwing. And of course learn kayaking. It’s just a little more advanced than the activities that we’re offering.”
King said each day will focus on a theme. She said the first day will cover history with campers learning how the park came to be, where they are now and where they are going. She said campers would likely gain new information about park features.
King said day two was nature/water with kayaking on Byrd Lake followed by hiking essentials and survival. She said the last day covered campfire cooking beginning with breakfast and culminating in archery and tomahawk throwing.
“And of course if someone hasn’t experienced an activity before, we’ll help them and guide them through it,” King said.
She said the camp consists of half day sessions from 8 a.m. to noon but campers are welcome to stay as long as they like exploring the park after each day’s session.
Cumberland Mountain State Park’s Adult Summer Camp runs from August 7-9 for ages 40 and up. Space is limited and registration is required.
