The Fairfield Glade Lions Club will host the 4th annual Strides Walk for Diabetes Awareness Saturday.
Chairman Steve McLelland said the event begins at 9:00 a.m. at Crossville’s Centennial Park.
“It is an easy 1.1 mile walk,” McLelland said. “And we raise funds to try to send as many children from the ages nine to 15 with type one diabetes to a two week camp.”
McLelland said the Lions Club advocates for the blind and visually impaired. McLelland said Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, so starting a awareness walk fit the club’s mission.
“Individual walkers will donate $25, couples will donate $40,” McLelland said. “We also have bandanas for dogs, and people donate $5 for that. If you are a student under 18, it is $10.”
McLelland said the money from the walk will help send kids to an educational camp in Soddy-Daisy, Tn. McLelland said about 90 kids get to go and make friends with peers that face the same challenges.
“And at the end we have fruit, and we have a completion pin that we hand out to the walkers,” McLelland said. “So, it is a really nice event. We mainly raise money for the children, but we also raise money for the American Diabetes Association.”
Crossville Lions Club, Cumberland County High School’s Leo Club and the Cumberland Diabetes Center are also helping organize the event. McLelland said Bunkers Grill and Patio bar will be the cooperate sponsor with other businesses welcome to participate.
McLelland said those interested can sign up to participate the day of at the event location.
