Crossville Purchases Old Ice Center Property For Future Rec Center

Crossville has purchased 24 acres on Genesis Road for its future indoor recreation facility.

City Manager Greg Wood said the city council approved a $550,000 maximum bid price, acquiring the property for $540,000. Wood said next step designing and evaluating cost estimates to bond the estimated $30 million project.

“It’s going to be a long process but I think the citizens, at least according to all the survey data that’s been done,” Wood said. “This is something that they would like for their community. So we will fill the bill.”

Wood said the location checked two important boxes, high-visibility and enough acreage to allow for an outdoor water component. He said the property is fronted by Webb Avenue and Iris Lane across from city hall, featuring enough space for a potential water park.

“Outdoor is probably more recreation facility, not the amenities of our splash pad,” Wood said. “More things as far as making it more like an outdoor water park, as opposed to a competition type thing.”

Wood said the city was targeting 10-12 acres for the facility, however this location has 18 acres of usable land. Wood said the extra space is for future possibilities.

“There is a stream that runs through it that holds a possibility for future walking trails and things like that,” Wood said. “Actually, a 24 acre site would actually be a great site for a looped-type walking trail. So we’ve got other options, having the larger amount of land.”

The council previously authorized Wood to bid up to $480,000 on land where the council hoped to build an indoor recreation center. The council met in a special-called meeting Thursday to authorize a higher maximum bid as the auction moved toward closing.
