Crossville City Council Meets, Approves Multiple Consent Items, Bids & Purchases

When the Crossville City Council met tonight, they wasted no time on extensive discussion of 19 distinct items. With two roll-call votes, they approved one ordinance on first reading, 11 additional consent items and seven purchase requests.

The sole sticking point was an ordinance amending Municipal Code 10-202 regarding the tethering of dogs within the city limits.

After extensive discussion, Mayor Pro Tem J.H. Graham, III moved to approve on first reading the ordinance in title only. Councilwoman Pamala Harris seconded; the motion passed 4-1 on a roll-call vote, with Mayor James Mayberry casting the lone dissenting vote.

“I personally feel that this ordinance is getting out of hand,” Mayberry said, kicking off discussion of the matter. “If you have a pet, you should be able to take care of it on your own.”

After the meeting, Graham told 94.1 News his motion to approve the ordinance in title only was simply a means to get the measure looked at and discussed further down the road, on subsequent readings.
