Crossville City Council Hears Disc Golf Idea

The Golf Capital Of The Tennessee could add disc golf to its repertoire.

Crossville City Council heard a proposal at its Tuesday work session to construct a disc golf course at Meadow Park Lake. Local player Ethan Hadley said the course could bring in more tourist dollars to Cumberland County.

“If we have one course, it needs to be a good one and Meadow Park Lake is perfect for it,” Hadley said. “You have open areas that will take very little development and then you have wooded areas that will take very little development.”

Disc golf plays like golf except frisbees are used instead of balls and clubs. Hadley said it has consistently been one of the fastest growing sports and a healthy game for players. Hadley said the local club wanted the city to be a partner in the project, but the club would sell sponsorships in the park to fund hole placements and the purchases of baskets and turf needed to play.

“If we wanted to have a disc golf course in and playable by next spring, the capital investment is something to do it we can handle in a fairly short appeal for sponsorships,” Hadley said.

City Manager Greg Wood said he supported the idea but he would like to see a master plan for Meadow Park before committing.

“This would be an opportunity to do a master plan and even take it into context what it’s going to look like if we end up raising the dam 15 feet,” Wood said. “We want to make sure we bring in every contingency.”

Previous efforts to construct a course stalled, Hadley said, including one plan to build a course on the Roane State campus.

City Council will discuss the idea more at its regular meeting next week.
