Crossville Approved To Take Next Steps With Main St. Sidewalk Project

T-DOT approved the City of Crossville to move forward with its Main Street Sidewalk Project this week.

The program seeks to make the downtown more pedestrian friendly. City Manager Greg Wood said they received grant funding of about $1.25 million, but expect the project will go over that by several hundred thousand dollars.

“So we’ll not just do the sidewalks but we’ll get some signalized crossings for pedestrians which will make it much more user-friendly, we’ll also get rid of the ugly street lights and get more decorative LEDs,” Wood said. “So it’ll have a much better look to downtown, it’ll be safer, it’ll be ADA-compliant, so a lot of good things are going to happen with this.”

Wood said they are prepared to spend that this coming fiscal year, but it will depend on what pot of money it will come from.

Wood said the project’s genesis was actually two administrations ago, when the city received grant funding but returned it after deeming the project too expensive. He said this iteration of the project has been in the works for about six years or so.

Wood said they anticipate going to bid in the next couple of months. He said he anticipates the project to take about a year.

“It’s just that we ask people to be patient when it finally does happen,” Wood said. “But it’ll make downtown much more user-friendly and much nicer to look at.”
