CRMC Wants To Hire American Sign Language Interpreter

Cookeville Regional Medical Center is hiring an American Sign Language interpreter to serve increased demand.

Director of Patient Experience Craig Norris said eliminating communication barriers is proven to result in increased patient satisfaction and comfort. He said studies show that better language interpretation decreases adverse medical outcomes and improves adherence to medical advice.

“It’s really important that we include everyone,” Norris said. “That everyone has the same access to care and there’s no barriers. Everyone understands what the plan is, what the providers and the staff are trying to communicate. So we really just wanted to make sure that every single patient was treated the same and has the same access and same opportunities.”

Norris said the goal is to have the interpreter on call 24/7, and available to come to the Emergency Room whenever service is requested. He said interviews will begin soon and he would love to have the position filled by March.

“We don’t require them to necessarily be a medical expert,” Norris said. “While we would love if they did have a medical background or some medical experience, it isn’t necessarily required. That can be trained, but we do just need someone that can speak fluent ASL.”

Norris said up to this point, the hospital has used a Video Remote Interpreter System. He said while the system provided needed communication, having a human interpreter would increase emotional comfort and put the patient more at ease. He said demand has increased in recent months.

“We just want to be able to offer that same level of service that we offer to our Spanish-speaking patients,” Norris said.
