The City of Cookeville will consider an ordinance to allow the use of an agency for fine collection.
City Manager Mike Davidson said the amendment would apply to traffic citations.
“Well, it certainly will help to make sure that we follow the judge’s orders and we get those fines collected,” Davidson said. “Ultimately that is it, just following what the judge has in place and getting those fines collected.”
Davidson said the court clerk’s office has experienced issues when collecting fines.
“In the past, what happens is when the fines go unpaid, that citation information is sent to the state. The state will suspend the license,” Davidson said. “And eventually, to get that license reinstated, they have to come back and have that citation paid. Right now a court case has suspended that practice.”
The Cookeville City Council will address the first reading of the ordinance during Thursday’s meeting.
