Cookeville Surpluses Police Car to Baxter

Baxter Police will soon receive a surplused police car once used by the Cookeville Police Department.

Cookeville Police Chief Randy Evans says he’s glad the department can assist other law enforcement in the area.

“[The car] was still serviceable to some degree and it will start. A lot of times we surplus vehicles that are not serviceable,” Evans says. “So we had the opportunity to help Baxter PD out, so the Council agreed and voted to approve the donation.

The 2009 Chevy Impala is one of a few vehicles Evans says the department has tucked away, typically due to mechanical issues.

Baxter Police Chief Danny Holmes says he’s thankful for both CPD and City Council for their donation.

“It means a lot to me and it means a lot to our department. Cookeville Police have always been strong supporters of our department,” Holmes says. “I know we’ve leaned on them several times for equipment that we just didn’t have and they always come through for us.”

Holmes says the car will be driven by a new officer who was using his personal vehicle to help direct school traffic.

“We’re going to make good use of it,” Holmes says. “[CPD] keeps their cars up really well and we’re just really excited to put it in our fleet.”

Cookeville City Council unanimously approved the surplus during Thursday evening’s meeting.
