Two shooting incidents along Cookeville’s Franklin Avenue within ten days of each other is a source of concern for some residents.
Cookeville Police Chief Randy Evans said while it’s concerning any time you have incidents of this nature, the community doesn’t need to be alarmed.
“At this time I really can’t comment on specifics about the case, but I do think our community is safe,” Evans said. “I think that area of town is safe, but we are going to increase our patrols and already have in that area just to ensure we keep a handle on things.”
Evans said that while there are drug issues in our community, they use all the resources they can to combat it.
“There’s no shortage of drug activity in our community unfortunately,” Evans said. “We work that area pretty hard, and we work ‘the drug world’ if you will pretty regularly. We have detectives permanently assigned to that assignment, as well as our Sheriff’s Department.”
Evans said that both Cookeville Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department have been in successful in drug seizure cases previously, including having several successful indictments. He said that he doesn’t know about cases specifically in the area of the shootings.
Evans said officers are still searching for suspects. Evans said there is no new information at this time, but as shareable information becomes available they will make it known to the public. Evans said while it’s hard to comment or speculate during active investigations, preliminary investigations show no indication of gang-related activity in the area.
