Cookeville Police Department warning residents of another scam call posing as the department.
This is the second instance of scam calls over the last month. PIO Lieutenant Anthony Leonard said this week they’ve received reports of at least two instances where callers demanded money for payments.
“The Cookeville community has a lot of trust in the police department and unfortunately, the scammers are using that trust as a way to get an edge on the caller,” Leonard said. “So they’re using the trust the community has built with the Cookeville Police Department to make a fraudulent transfer of money.”
Leonard said a Cookeville Police Department employee will never call and ask for any kind of payment over the phone. He said if you suspect a potential scam, report it to the non-emergency line at 931-526-2125.
