The Cookeville Theatre Company is celebrating Black History Month with the production “We Rise Above.”
Cookeville Theater Company President Kathleen Gilpatrick said they are looking for local residents to be a part of the production. She said the evening will be filled with music, dance, poetry, gospel, and history. Gilpatrick said she encourages everyone to attend and experience how the power of theater can foster unity and create lasting change.
“I hope that they decide they are going to get involved in theater,” Gilpatrick said. “And I hope they feel empowered and energized, it’s just gonna be a really special evening.”
Gilpatrick said “We Rise Above” was created by herself and co-creator Latrice Willis and the night will be a special occasion for both. Gilpatrick said her first show she created was in kindergarten
Gilpatrick said the evening will take place on February 21, 22, 27, and 28 at 7:30pm at the Wesley Chapel Theater. The schedule includes a Matinee performance on February 22. Gilpatrick said there are still open slots for individuals interested in joining the production and asked them to reach out to the Cookeville Theatre Company online if interested.
“It can change lives in so many ways because people can come express themselves and be creative and come out of there shell somewhat. Theater helps you be able to speak in public, have an interview, just in general.”
Gilpatrick said theater became the one thing she has ever wanted to do. Gilpatrick said over the years, her passion for the stage has only grown, shaping her career and aspirations. Gilpatrick said Willis shares her feelings about the power of theater and has an equal desire to bring their shared love for the art form to the Cookeville community.
“Come and be a part of our community,” Gilpatrick said. “Once your in the theater, you always have a home no matter where you go.”
