Cookeville Approves Land Transfer For Possible Concrete Company

Cookeville City Council approved a resolution conveying a portion of land off of Tennessee Avenue to the Industrial Development Board Thursday night.

The same parcel of land received a rezoning approval earlier in the meeting to heavy manufacturing. A concrete company is interested in building in the park.

Cookeville Economic Development Coordinator Melinda Keifer said the IDB would facilitate the sales purchase agreement with the company. No timetable has been set.

“The rezoning was required as part of that,” Keifer said. “Also in that resolution you’ll notice that company will be required to make road improvements. They are not asking for any incentives. They are going to be an incredible community partner.”

Keifer said a representative from the company was not present at the meeting due to travel issues.

Interest continues in the Highlands Economic Park and the Upper Cumberland overall. Keifer said Cookeville’s economic development is poised for a great future.

“In the last 90 to 120 days, we filled out eight RFI’s from across the globe and have represented several different sectors,” Keifer said. “People are coming back to work. We’ve got lots of work to do. I want you to feel encouraged. I want you to feel confident about your team.”

In other business Thursday night, City Council approved the rezoning of a parcel of land located on Buffalo Valley Road for a new subdivision. The developer asked for the land to be rezoned to RS-5.

Council set a public hearing for Thursday, August 19th for the rezoning of land along East 6th Street and part of North Washington Avenue.

Council approved the purchase of several budgeted vehicles for several departments. These include one street-sweeper and two pickups for the Public Works Department, three vehicles for for the Water Quality Control Department, 10 vehicles for the Electric, Gas and Water Quality Control Departments, three vehicles for the Leisure Services Department, and three vehicles for the Police Department.

The Police Department received approval for the purchase of IT equipment for the new Police Department Headquarters. It totaled some $114,722 from its furniture, fixtures, and equipment budget.
