Cookeville City Council accepted the almost $1.2 million bid to begin the East 10th Street widening project at a special called meeting Tuesday morning.
Public Works Director Greg Brown said that the $1,174,000 bid from Rogers Group is for the first phase of work from Wilson Avenue to Chocolate Drive. He said the bid is for the portion of work the city is responsible for.
“Our estimate was $1,192,000,” Brown said. “We did two estimates. One with us performing the work and then one using TDOT bid prices. So it came in roughly $18,000 less than our estimate prices so we thought that was a good bid.”
Brown said that the work would consist of five lanes and an eastbound right turn lane at Old Kentucky Road and at the 10th Street entrance of the new shopping development. He said they’d also add a traffic signal at Doris Drive.
Brown said that the developer will be doing all of the grading up to subgrade, sidewalk, curb, and gutter on the development side, as well as storm sewer. He said that the bid will cover the remainder of the project which includes base stone, asphalt, curb, gutter, and sidewalk, and storm sewer on the north side of the road.
City Manager James Mills said that the bid would require a budget amendment, as the city had originally budgeted only $600,000.
“When we originally estimated this,” Mills said. “This was when the city, Public Works crews, would be doing the work and with our equipment, so we will be doing a budget amendment at a later date.”
Brown said they hope to have the project completed by next spring.
