The Putnam County community joined together at Double Springs Church of Christ Wednesday night to remember lives lost one year ago.
Mayor Randy Porter said the community joins in praying for the families to continue their healing.
“We remember the pain and suffering that so many of you experienced,” Porter said. “We remember the loss of your family members, friends, neighbors and loved ones. We remember the loss of homes and belongings, we remember the devastation and how so many lives were changed forever that day.”
Local officials, including fire, medical, EMS and rescue personnel, lit one candle in honor of each of those who died. Double Springs Church of Christ Youth Pastor Dylan Wood said faith and community cannot be taken away from Putnam County.
“The lord put up a bubble of protection and I pray that, that continues to happen and he brings you comfort and he brings you strength,” Wood said. “We as the church, we want you to know that again, we’ll continue to be here for you and it was truly an honor to serve our community. We hope that we can continue to do that, we hope that we can continue to be a light. But again, the Lord gave us a way and we did that.”
Porter called the outreach of the community exceptional. He pointed out that Double Springs Church of Christ served as a real beacon for the Interstate 70 corridor.
“Many lights shined very brightly that day and the weeks following,” Porter said. “So tonight we want to remember the lives lost, the pain suffered but also to thank everyone that did anything to help during our time of need. Talking about lights shining during that time, none were any brighter than Double Springs Church of Christ, where we are tonight. A small church that just wanted to be a light to the community around it and oh, what a light it was.”
